Product QuestionsHow Flexible is Cork
The cork layer is made from tiny bits of compressed cork pieces bonded to a rubber base, this makes the mat super flexible across uneven ground and easy to roll up.
Why Choose Cork Space over Cheaper Alternatives?
Although at first glance they may appear similar, cheaper cork mats that use TPE or PER as they base are not as durable or sustainable. Poorer quality cork can also be more prone to chipping, cracking or peeling. Poorly designed bases don’t offer the same comfort, padding or support. Cork Space is not cheap – it is a premium yoga mat that delivers a uniquely wonderful yoga experience. Many wonder why they didn’t invest in a better mat (that makes them smile every time) years ago.
Is Natural Rubber Sustainable?
Yes, natural rubber comes from the tree sap of the Hevea Brasiliensis tree – a 100% renewable resource that is tapped from living rubber trees. We use non-amazonian natural rubber sourced from Vietnam. Our mats use vulcanised natural rubber, whereby the soft tree sap is hardened and made stronger for a lifetime of use – while still being bio-degradeable in much shorter time-frame than plastic.
Is Cork Sustainable?
Yes, cork is a sustainable material because it naturally regrows. Cork is harvested every 10 to 15 years from the living Cork Oak Trees and is replaced with new bark. It also has a low carbon footprint, as the trees are never cut down in order to harvest the cork (they remain a protected species in Portugal).
Demand for cork provides much needed investment in the industry, providing jobs and supporting the local economy. The harvesting of cork is a sustainable practice. While cork bark is regrowing, the trees suck up even more CO2 from the surrounding environment which helps combat global warming.
I Heard There Is a Cork Shortage?
There is an abundance of cork. The cork shortage myth is said to be started by Wine PR departments to help explain their transition to plastic stoppers to save money. Using cork in new and innovative ways helps to maintain demand for the cork industry, preserving Cork Oak forests across Portugal and the Mediterranean for generations to come.
Suitable for Hot Yoga?
Yes – absolutely. It can handle any amount of sweat you can throw at it. In fact cork gets gripper, the sweatier you get.
Do You Have Care Instructions?
While the mat is strong and durable, here’s how to keep it in tip-top condition:
- Avoid folding or creasing, roll cork side facing out.
- Always use with clean feet & hands, no shoes.
- Once a month (or after a very heavy session) wipe your mat with a soft wet cloth (use white vinegar OR lemon OR natural soap mixed with hot water) to remove oils and dirt. Bi-carbonate of soda also works great for deeper cleaning. Leave it out flat or over a line to dry before storing away.
- As an all-natural product, it’s normal for cork to change colour over time.
